Year after year, heatwaves strike harder. Summer feels like a thermometer on steroids. All of this puts a heavy strain on our bodies. We need light, refreshing, and hydrating meals. This watermelon-feta chill grid with cucumber helps you face the extreme heat with a smile.
With cubes of feta, cucumber, and watermelon, you're not just creating a visual feast-you're also treating yourself to a flavor explosion that cools and hydrates instantly. Watermelon and cucumber are packed with water, so every cube is like a tiny sip of refreshment. The red onion adds a kick, the olive oil brings a touch of luxury, and the mint leaves tie it all together. The perfect, delicious heatwave snack for young and old alike. Or a light lunch with a slice of baguette.
How to make a watermelon-feta chill grid?
You'll immediately notice that this watermelon-feta chill grid with cucumber doesn't require any hot kitchen magic. All heat sources stay wisely off! All you need is a bit of chopping before arranging the cubes on the plates.
We start with the watermelon. Cut a slice about 1 to 2 centimeters thick, then remove the rind so only the red flesh remains. Cut this into cubes of the same thickness.
Next up: the cucumber. In this case, peel it first, then cut it into cubes of roughly the same size.
Finally, cut the feta cheese into cubes as well.
For decoration, you can also peel a red onion and slice it into rings. Have a few mint leaves ready for garnish.
Playing with the cubes
Now, arrange the cubes on the plates to your liking. In this case, I alternated watermelon - cucumber - watermelon - feta. This is actually the most "work" involved. But of course, you can also just mix everything together.
Finish it off with some red onion rings and a mint leaf. Finally, drizzle a bit of olive oil around the checkerboard.
And there you have it: your summer anti-heat snack! Now you can start playing with the cubes. Optionally, this also makes a light lunch with a slice of baguette.
Eating and drinking during a heatwave: what to do, and what to avoid?
Heatwaves call for an adjustment in our eating habits. Our bodies struggle to dissipate heat, and heavy, hot meals only make things worse. But what should you eat-and what should you avoid? Here are some easy tips.
What to focus on during a heatwave?
Hydration is key
Drink regularly and sufficiently, even if you're not thirsty. Water, herbal teas (cold or lukewarm), and water-rich vegetables and fruits like cucumber, watermelon, zucchini, and oranges help you stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks-they actually dehydrate you.
Light, water-rich meals
Opt for small, light portions that are easy to digest and packed with moisture. Think of:
- Raw vegetables (cucumber, tomato, bell pepper, radish)
- Fruit (watermelon, melon, strawberries, citrus fruits)
- Lean protein (feta, quark, chicken, fish)
- Cold soups (gazpachos)
Balance your electrolytes
When we sweat, we lose not just water but also salts and minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Add a pinch of salt to your meals, or eat foods rich in these minerals, such as bananas, spinach, nuts, and seeds.
Fiber: the unsung hero
Fiber helps keep your digestion smooth, which is especially important during heatwaves. Choose whole foods like:
- Whole grains (quinoa, whole wheat pasta, brown rice)
- Fruits and vegetables with skin (apples, pears, carrots)
- Legumes (lentils, chickpeas)
- Nuts and seeds (almonds, chia seeds, flaxseeds)
Note: Freshly squeezed juice (like apple juice) still contains some fiber and nutrients, but whole fruits are always the better choice. Bottled juice, especially if sweetened, lacks fiber and often contains added sugars, which are best avoided.
Avoid heavy, hot dishes
Fried, deep-fried, or fatty meals strain your digestion and raise your body temperature. Spicy foods can also heighten heat sensitivity. You've probably experienced it: as you eat, sweat pours out of every pore. That's because your body has to work hard to digest, and that heat needs to be released.
Eat at the coolest times
Plan your main meals for the morning or late evening, when temperatures are lower. During the day, stick to light snacks, like this watermelon-feta chill grid with watermelon, cucumber, and feta.
What to avoid during a heatwave?
The following foods and drinks are best avoided during a heatwave. They may be tempting, but they only add extra strain to your body.
- Alcohol - Dehydrates and worsens dehydration.
- Coffee and black tea - Act as diuretics.
- Heavy sauces and fatty dishes - Hard to digest and heat-inducing.
- Too much sugar - Can lead to energy crashes and increased thirst.
- Ice cream and ice-cold drinks - Can shock your system and slow digestion. Plus, your body has to work extra hard to warm them up.
- Fiber-free juices - Lack satiety and are often loaded with added sugars. Opt for fresh fruit instead of sweetened apple juice.
